Magazines: Industries - the appeal of print and independent magazines

1) Writer's Edit journal article

1.) An independent print magazine is where publication is produced without solid financial backing or large control, it is the opposite of mainstream publishing conglomerates.

2.) Hamilton (2013) suggests that independent magazines within the digital age will "thrive even as the global newspaper and book industry falter".

3.) The article suggests that independent publishers use digital media to target their niche audiences by presenting snippets of exclusive interviews with highly known people like celebrities as well as displaying their front covers.

4.) The article suggests that independent magazines might be succeeding whilst global magazines publishers (like Bauer) are struggling because mainstream magazines fall into traditional norms whereas modern people crave newer and fresher means of creative expression.

5.) It is significant that independent magazines are owned and created by the same people since it means the making of a magazine is more intimate and structured in the way that a lot of time and effort is put into it. It changes the creative process and direction of the magazine by making it more orderly and artful for their niche client base.

6.) The article suggests that the benefits of a "do-it-yourself" approach to creating an independent magazine is that audiences feel their creative freedom being guided through instead of having to conform to traditional magazines which do not offer as much self expression.

7.) Audiences may enjoy physical magazines over digital ones because of the different experience whilst reading it, it it more intimate to hold and purchase a magazine and feel the pages whilst you read it rather than staring at a screen and reading.

8.) Challenges publications faced in terms of funding and distributing independent magazines are much higher than mainstream publishers because of their lower income from clients because there is no fanatical backing towards the magazine.

2) Irish Times feature on independent magazines

1.) Independent magazines are popular because they play with "form" and their subjects are artful and diverse whilst being driven by passion.

2.) The magazine publishing industry sets up to favour the bigger publications because it is promised to bring back much larger sums of money over a more niche and independent magazine because of their already massive loyal client base.

3.) The article suggests finding an audience of an independent magazine is done by speaking of niche bases instead of broad subjects like "football", however not niche enough that not enough of people would read it to not get enough revenue back.

4.) The challenged for magazine distributors are shipping costs and the risk of magazines not selling and wasting money.

5.) An example of independent magazines only making money by diversifying into other products is by advertising already well known brands like Nike or people like celebrities to draw in people who are fans of those things.
