Advertising: David Gauntlett and masculinity
1.) Gauntlet provides the example of tradition being in a decline by more equalised ideals becoming more popular over the olden hierarchical system of society.
2.) He suggests that media influences will also become more left winged as societies progress due to common rejections of "traditional" means.
3.) Gauntlet suggests that generational differences are mainly due to the difference of medias and representation, a more contemporary media is more inclusive and representative than an older one which can be reflected within the generations people.
4.) Gauntlet suggests that masculinity is not in crisis but it is due to a growing insecurity of masculinity by magazines created by men which creates a sense of crisis when if audiences did not expose themselves to these magazines this "crisis" would be averted.
5.) You could argue the stereotypical ideal of a man is still prevalent in advertisement however it is no whee near as prevalent as it was in older medias. Whilst those toxic masculine undertones are still there, they are much better hidden/ overwritten on.
6.) As of 2026, I believe the ideal of a liberated woman (aka "girl power") is much more mainstream and accepted rather than the previous toxic presentations of masculinity. These "girl power" personas are replicated throughout a numerous amount of adverts, films, all medias and have been a good source of ixclusivity and representation. The ideal of "girl power" completely subverts the stereotypical persona of femininity which is expected to be submissive and inferior, "girl power" acts as a powerful and liberated and independent persona for all girls and women.
7.) I do agree with the Gauntlets idea that younger generations are not threatened by traditional gender roles since the idea of gender liberation is more openly accepted and portrayed by many however some parents may continue to force these traditional gender stereotypes onto their children which may be seen as a form of repression.
8.) Gauntlet provides the example of genders being a changing nature through the modern exposure to queer identities and representation which both creates awareness of the subject as well as teaching non traditional display of gender/love to be accepted and not looked down upon.
9.) Advertising is a good idea of the "contradictory element" due to the mass medias big diversity which means that there are any different perspectives from many different people which leads the medias element to be vastly fluid and changing.
10.) I do agree that media do reinforce changing attitudes towards gender and sexuality in society due to recent acception of more diverse and devient personas from the norm. It has been more accepted within society to not be constantly abiding to traditional and strict societal norms.
Andrew Tate - Masculinty in Crisis
1.) Misogyny is the sexist and discriminitory behaviour against women purely due to their sex. Tate links to this toxic idea due to his often diminishing and harmful behaviour against innocent women, limiting them to nothing but sex slaves, "dish washers" and many more misogynistic terms.
2.) Andrew Tate used social media to build up his reputation to young and vunerable boys by selling his ravishing life style and ideals as luxiourous and attainable if other young boys followed his crude ways, mainly over TikTok and YouTube, along with numerous different podcasts.
3.) Andrews existance I think denies the idea of masculiity being in crisis since his portayal of masculinity is very extreme and toxic, suggesting that masculinity is no where near in crisis but is very prodominat within society.
