MIGRAIN: Collective identity in the online age

Collective identity and representing ourselves: blog tasks

1.) The article states that a person can be defined by their appearance like hair style, clothing, makeup, etc. These appearances construct an image of how we are attempted to portray ourselves.

2.) The term "Style over Substance" refers to the idea that a visual aesthetic is more important than the quality of something/someone. I do agree that this has become more apparent within a modern audience due to relatively recent desired to be seen as unique as possible, these people usual adapt the word "niche" into quoted individuality.

3.) Jean Baudrillard's theory of "media saturation" insinuates that modern societies are extremely overwhelmed by media, signs and images that the boundary between reality and representation has been diminished which in result has caused a liminal state of "hyperreality".

4.) Personally, whenever I like to view my own social media to be a personal scrapbook in which I can share my recent adventures or crafts with my close friends and family. I do not ever delete any of my posts since I like to look back and them and remind myself of how I have been and what sort of state I was in. I do not however share my entire life on my social medias however since that isn't something I'd necessarily scrap book about, I also think that it's not a good idea to put your personal life online.

5.) To me personally, I do not mind "data mining" since I know that I have never shared anything remotely personal within my online presence and I if anything would be more than happy if adverts or products were pushed out to me regarding my interest since that is something I do reveal I do enjoy online (stuff like video games, movies, books, artists, etc.

Task 2: Media Magazine cartoon

1.) Constructing Identity: the media provides tools, stories, and characters, etc that audiences can use to build their own personas.

"Pick and Mix" Theory: Individuals are not passive (they "pick and mix" different ideas, values, etc from various media to create a unique identity)

Diverse Representation: Modern media offers a larger range of identities compared to the past, moving away from "traditional" stereotypes to more complex representations of gender, sexuality, etc.

Active Audience: Instead of just consuming media, audiences actively engage with content, choosing messages that fit their lives and ignoring those that do not.

Identity as Process: Identity is not a fixed ideal, but a fluid, constantly evolving process influenced by the diverse media, social contexts, everyday creative practices people consume.

Task 3: Representation & Identity: Factsheet blog task

1.) Collective identity is the phrase given to the ideal that a shared sense of belonging in a group or community, usually constructed by a common interest, experience, goal etc, is what binds people together. Things such as social movements, cultures, nations, etc shape shared experiences and collective actions.

2.) New technology has shifted collective identity from ridged, geographically bound communities to fluid, interest based and transnational digital groups.

3.) David Gauntlett uses that phrase ‘Identity is complicated; everyone thinks they have got one.’ to display the new focus on identity.
