MIGRAIN: Industries - Public service broadcasting

Ofcom review of PSB in Britain

1.) It is a critical time for public broadcasting since audience viewing patters have continues to change rapidly and content from global content providers is increasing.

2.) Live broadcast has been declined, audiences increasingly prefer to at times which suit them online using global services with on demand content services.

3.) People do enjoy public broadcastings trust worthy news and programmes that showcase different aspect of UK life and culture. Audiences who indulge in PBC are most usually people who prefer content which "informs, educates and entertains".

4.) As competition for views increase, cost pressures rise and traditional broadcast revenue streams are reduced.

5.)  PBC provides audiences with approximately 32000 hours of hours of UK news along with a large range of subjects like children's programmes, dramas and current affairs.

6.) Between 2014 and 2018 net advertising revenue has fallen by 3.8% per year which is equivalent to approximately £325 million.

7.) In the digital age on demand services like Netflix are at higher demands for audiences due to it's conveniences and audiences stopping to plan their routine around set PBC programmes when they could have content whenever and wherever they please.

Goldsmiths report on Public Service TV

1.) Number of audiences have reduced mainly younger audiences being involved since they use different platforms to consume media. Over the last generation public service channels have had to change to comply to younger audiences needs and wants.

2.) Reports suggest that Ofcome should replace its occasional review of public service with regular qualitative audit of public service content in order to secure audiences being served wanted, high quality and diverse programming.

3.) The report states that the BBC is the "most important part of television ecology" but their public service credentials are under threat.

4.) The report states that in the future the BBC should change their income to be a household fee or supplemented council tax.

5.) The report states that Chanel 4 is "a critical place in the public service ecology" that supports diverse audiences and independent production sectors.

6.) The report suggests that in the future Chanel 4 should operate not as a fully privatised company "neither in full or in part" and that they believe that the government should clarify its view on Chanel 4's future swiftly.

7.) New digital content providers link to public service broadcasting due to its influence however digital content is preferred since it can be viewed anywhere and anytime rather than waiting for a specific source of media.

MY opinion on public service broadcasting

1.) I do not think that the BBC should remain as the UK's public service broadcaster since they are already loosing numbers of audiences and still requesting subscriptions off of this audiences who do not even indulge in their media, audiences who more commonly turn to digital content providers for their sources or media consumption.

2.) I do not think that there is a massive role for the BBC in a digital world or any sot of traditional media since majority of audiences do not have the time to go out of their way to input themselves into these media sources and rather seek quick short form pieces of media from digital content providers.

3.) I do think that the BBC funding free should change from a licence fee to a subscription fee so that audience who do want to indulge in their media will pay for it and those who do not use their platform are not forces to pay for it.
