MIGRAIN: Reception theory
TASK 1:
1.) (RBK 50 cents advert) Preferred: The brand is trendy/cool, owning a piece of their merchandise will make you trendy/popular.
Negotiated: RBK as a brand aline with 50 Cents morals and does this to make their company look more tough and stern.
Oppositional: RBK advocated for gang violence and owning a piece of their merchandise means that you do too. Although 50 Cents hadn't aligned himself with a gang some of the audience may view the advert to be displaying this due to misconceptions and accusations.
2.) (50s-60s women love tide advert) Preferred: Tide is one of the best washing up aids in the market and will wash clothes the best compared to others.
Negotiated: Women absolutely love tide (the icons of love hearts above a woman hugging tide) almost as if they love their imposed role in the household of a cleaner and nanny, maybe even objectifying them to nothing but that.
Oppositional: Women are limited to nothing but their use in a house (e.g cleaning) and they are forced to love it (love hearts) due to societal pressure and norms.
TASK 2:
1.)
Sender: Kitchen Nightmares UK
Message: A 3 hour and 12 minute long documentary on a compilation of different kitchens around the UK with criticism from Gordon Ramsey.
Channel: The video is uploaded onto YouTube
Receiver: The audience, whoever is watching the video.
2.) Encoding: When a producer creates a meaning using symbols, language, ect.
Decoding: When the audience creates a meaning behind a piece of media through their own cultural context and experiences and backgrounds.
3.) It was criticised because it was too linear, not taking communication seriously, and medias were received as passive to an audience.
4.) He broke down communication into 5 separate sections: moment, production, circulation, consumption and reproduction.
5.) Hall's reception theory was that all audiences understand media texts in generally similar way.
6.) Perhaps the theory underestimates the powerful and strong influence of media industries and texts on different audiences.
