MIGRAIN: Narrative

1.) Moana is a good example since it uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.  2.)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5i5ERDE_2E  (opening to House M.D) The opening already clears the narrative of the show to be a hospital drama due to the imagery used of CT scans and X-rays, already creating an enigma code of "what is being shown on screen?". 3.) Katniss Evergreen (Hunger games), Jinx (Arcane) and Eren Yeager (attack on titan) 4.) An example of binary opposition is the classic "good vs evil" story line, for example 'Harry Potter' where Harry (protagonist: good) and Lord Voldemort (antagonist: bad). 5.) The example provided in the sheet is when a police officer captures a criminal in a criminal drama the ideology of law and order is emphasised to the audience.  6.) Both engima and action codes bring upon feelings of suspense and drama which both release (small) amounts of dopamine which makes the overall expe...

MIGRAIN: Genre

TASK 1: MEDIA FACTSHEET 3: 1.) Codes and conventions are the given example of visual iconographies. They are important because they simplify complex and usually hard to understand topics with icons, making it easier for an audience to interpret. 2.) The example of importance of narrative is newspaper and tv and how easy it is to identify genre by details, language options, etc.  3.) Period/Country, director/star, technical process, style, series, audience.  4.) Genre is used by an audience since it allows them to use prior knowledge to convey if they'll like a piece of media or not. It also allows audiences to compare and reject a genre.  5.) Genre is used by producers in production, attracting audiences and marketing texts. MEDIA FACTSHEET 126: 1.) X-men movies, The Avengers, Spiderman (since 2000), Guardian of the Galaxies, Agents of Shield (series)  2.) Schatz'z theory can be used for the superhero genre since it is dependent on the culture and background of...

MIGRAIN: Reception theory

Image
TASK 1: 1.) (RBK 50 cents advert) Preferred : The brand is trendy/cool, owning a piece of their merchandise will make you trendy/popular.  Negotiated : RBK as a brand aline with 50 Cents morals and does this to make their company look more tough and stern.  Oppositional : RBK advocated for gang violence and owning a piece of their merchandise means that you do too. Although 50 Cents hadn't aligned himself with a gang some of the audience may view the advert to be displaying this due to misconceptions and accusations.  2.) (50s-60s women love tide advert) Preferred : Tide is one of the best washing up aids in the market and will wash clothes the best compared to others.  Negotiated : Women absolutely love tide (the icons of love hearts above a woman hugging tide) almost as if they love their imposed role in the household of a cleaner and nanny, maybe even objectifying them to nothing but that.  Oppositional : Women are limited to nothing but their use in a...

MIGRAIN: Structuralism

Task 1: 1.) Structuralism is a theoretical perspective that emphasises existence of universal structures underlying the surface differences of media texts.  2.) Binary oppositions is something that creates conflict and drives a narrative which is useful since it helps an audience understand ideas by establishing clear distinctions/narratives.  3.) Genre and the auteur theory link to structuralism because they analyse media and search for underlying structures/codes instead of one single audience interpretation.  4.) Post structuralism argues against structuralism by saying that in media meanings aren't fixed or set in stone but are subjective to interpretation.  5.)I agree with the idea of post-structuralism more since I aline with the idea that meanings in media isn't something that fixed but it can be interpreted in many different ways.  Task 2: A post-structuralist analysis would break down the set meanings, arguing they are not set in stone and depende...
